Summary This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor position at the Valley Shore YMCA provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. Duties ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Instructs swim lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, prepares lesson plans as needed, maintains records and evaluates swimmers to determine appropriate instruction
- Builds authentic relationships with students and parents, helping them to connect with each other and the YMCA, and encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers students and parents to other YMCA programs
- Attends mandatory staff meetings and instructor trainings and maintains communications with management and co-workers
- Manages time by arriving in advance to classes, setting up necessary tools and equipment, putting equipment away following completion of class, and reports damaged equipment to management
- Follows YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including safety and emergency procedures and completing incident and accident reports as necessary
- Assists lifeguards in moving lane lines and safety ropes as needed before and after class and completes
Lifeguard Certification Course within 6 months of hire for aquatic safety

Requirements QUALIFICATIONS: - Be at least 16 years of age.
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent, preferred.
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen preferred.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Bilingual skills a plus.

- Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of the position and to supervise program activities and respond to emergencies and challenging situations
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques
- Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud from the pool ventilation system to sounds of children at play!
